Day of the Cross in El Salvador

In El Salvador, every May 3rd, the Day of the Cross is celebrated. It is a religious and cultural festivity, in which those who celebrate this day place a cross made from the jiote tree in the courtyards of their houses.

In communities, where this day is commemorated, the cross is usually decorated with different materials with many colours and ornaments of various shapes, and it is  often accompanied by lots of seasonal fruit, such as mango, bananas, jocotes, papayas, mandarins, pineapples and other fruit. The installation forms an altar, where people must first bow and venerate the cross, kneel and cross themselves, and only then tey may eat one of the fruits on display.

The celebration of the cross is seeking for blessing of homes and the earth so that they will always be prosperous and nature will provide daily bread for the community. By means of the fruits and basic grains, such as corn, beans and rice, it is also requested that the winter of the year be very good, so that the cornfields and crops grow and bear the desired fruit.

The indigenous communities assure that this deep-rooted tradition is the starting point of the rainy season, the birth of flowers and the fruits.
